Story: Hathaway portrays Maggie, an alluring free spirit who won’t let anyone – or anything – tie her down. But she meets her match in Jamie (Gyllenhaal), whose relentless and nearly infallible charm serve him well with the ladies and in the cutthroat world of pharmaceutical sales. Maggie and Jamie’s evolving relationship takes them both by surprise, as they find themselves under the influence of the ultimate drug: love.

Production: Principal photography for the film began in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania region on September 18, 2009. The city was chosen for its atmosphere, rich medical history, the state’s tax incentive program for film productions, and the area’s experienced crews. McCandless, Squirrel Hill, Fox Chapel, Sewickley, Aliquippa, and Brownsville have been used as locations for the film, as well as Mellon Arena, Jane Street in the South Side between 17th and 18th streets, the Omni William Penn Hotel, The Capital Grille, and Station Square. Pittsburgh doubled as Chicago for some scenes.A section of the Mon-Fayette Expressway (Pennsylvania Route 43) in Washington County was used for scenes on November 15–16, delaying traffic. A helicopter was used for filming and 40 to 50 vehicles were brought in for the shoot.Trailers and tents were set up on the campus of Ringgold High School while filming took place on the Expressway. An area was set aside for actors waiting to film their scenes.

This film could have gone in any number of directions, from reality-inspired farce to teary soap opera, but director and co-writer Zwick keeps dodging its many pitfalls, following a through-line that allows the film to be both funny and serious, as the occasion demands. The actors walk that same tightrope with grace and charisma. They also up the ante for mainstream movies by treating sex (and nudity) with refreshing, grown-up candor. The movie further benefits from a strong supporting cast including such welcome and reliable performers as Oliver Platt, Hank Azaria, Judy Greer, and in just one scene, George Segal and the late Jill Clayburgh. The artist’s loft, coffee house, restaurants, late night cafes, medical offices and a sleek suburban home to a “pajama party” where the film takes place are all eye grabbers and Steven Fierberg’s cinematography does justice to these visually arresting locations. Much is going on in nearly every scene. Even a running gag about a homeless man who digs drug samples out of a dumpster where Jamie throws his rival’s products is damn funny.

In the end, this is a smart movie that could have been smarter. The script feels like it was a draft or so away from total clarity and focus. But the energy of the cast and a dive into an unfamiliar world make the movie rather addictive
