PRESCRIPTION DRUG USE AND ABUSE: Risk factors, red flags, and prevention strategies ( Postgraduate Medicine)

Abstract: When a patient is in physical or emotional pain, prescribing controlled substances often appears to be the simplest and most efficient way to relieve suffering and distress. However, in a minority of cases, this approach leads to prescription drug abuse and patient harm. In this article, the authors review the epidemiologic factors of prescription drug abuse, legal policies designed to safeguard against it, risk factors and red flags, and practical ways to minimize the chances of misuse.

Question by What is your problem: Is drug use and abuse a disease or a conscience effort?
I was recently trained on the use, abuse, subsequent addicition of users on drugs. I was informed that Drug use is a disease. I stood alone and disagreed because no one can decide to go to a 12 step program and cure their cancer. Nor do they arrest people for having kidney failure. Just a thought.

Answer by Nicole Sohma
the12 steps i find it ridiculous
i dont believe in it, yet my mom is in AA.
so i can’t say much. all i know is that it is pretty harsh.

i guess people do say it is a disease
and to cure it, either take AA or check into a clinic. even there they still recommend the 12 steps. they say it is the only way to go clean.
even then, the success rate of the best clinic here in the states is 17%. and that is only the people who make it one full year completely sober.

@Papsmeas Yeah, because no one can ever have knowledge of a subject without doing it first. Its called decades of clinical research idiot. Using the rationale, “you can’t know what a substance does unless you try it” is just bad logic. Grow up and learn to use your brain a little bit more effectively.

If i caught my child snorting coke, i’d hit some too. I think cutting coke is a serious offense..and can’t recommend it to folks. thanks doc! now we can spot coke users. I tell EVERYONE i meet that the government brings it in, and then puts poor people in jail for it. Eventually the people need to petition our CIA for allowing the drugs in, and then making it seem bad. Christians! unreal!
