Depression treatments can be as varied as the individuals who suffer from the disorder. Depression can affect each person differently and so the best possible avenue for treatment will depend on each individual’s particular needs. Of course there are some general forms of treatment which can be used in various combinations for most depressed patients, but finding just the right mix for you can be half the battle.

Step one in any treatment is recognizing and understanding the symptoms. While we all occasionally have feelings of sadness, anxiety and hopelessness caused by major life changes including moving, changing jobs or getting divorced, these feelings are usually temporary and resolve themselves over time. It is when they become overwhelming and constant that true depression sets in and this is when it becomes time to find the best depression treatments.

The primary cause of depression is disturbances in neurotransmissions, the regular messages that tell our brain how and what to feel. When neurotransmitters break down, the brain can have difficulty letting go of negative feelings or balancing them out with positive energy. Depression treatments focus on regaining this balance by re-establishing proper neurotransmission.

The major components of depression treatment are self-help steps, lifestyle changes, and professional help. The best depression treatments will involve some combination of each, tailored to the individual’s particular needs. Exactly what you need to help you will depend heavily on your circumstances and your physical makeup. It is imperative that you consult with your doctor before beginning any kind of treatment as professional medical help is a necessity for proper treatment.

Once you have acknowledged the problem, you can begin to consider which depression treatments will work best for you. No matter what you do, having a good support system in place is crucial. The more support you can get from family and friends, the easier the path to healing will be.

Along with providing support, the best depression treatments also encourage the patient to make changes to his or her lifestyle to increase positive energy. Getting more exercise, developing new interests, changing your diet to include foods rich in serotonin and making sure you get enough sleep can all help to adjust the balance of neurotransmitters. Therapy can also help as it allows you to express your feelings and address them more directly.

Medication can also be a part of most depression treatments, but it is important to remember that you have options. There is no reason to rely solely on traditional ant-depressants, which can carry the threat of becoming addictive as well as having serious side effects. There are other alternatives, among them natural herbal remedies which can help to restore proper neurotransmission without exposing you to side effects. Many people believe this makes them the best depression treatments because they are safe and healthy.

When it comes to treating depression, the most important thing to remember is that there is no one right answer. What’s wrong with “Evidence Based” depression treatments?

With all our medical advances, why is it that the incidence of depression and anxiety is skyrocketing. The World Health Organisation says that depression is the most disabling disease in the Western World today, yet all mental healthcare specialists seem to talk about is “evidence based” treatments such as counselling and anti depressants. Whilst these strategies have been shown to be helpful for some people, if this was really cutting edge advice, why aren’t we seeing the incidence of depression declining or at the very least plateauing. This in no way seeks to imply that medication and psychological counselling don’t have their place in treating depression, just that we are not exploring all the variables

Having interviewed thousands of people who have battled with depression, I am convinced that there are some serious issues with the “evidence based” approach to treating depression. These can be summarised as follows:

The “evidence” is where the money is

Unfortunately clinical trials are very expensive to run so private funding will only be directed towards those areas where “investors” can see a return on investment. In the world of depression treatments, this means that the vast majority of funds are directed towards medication and psychological counselling interventions. This means that important lifestyle strategies such as exercise, emotional support,nutrition, relaxation, and fulfilling work are relatively ignored. Ironically these less discussed strategies can be much less costly to implement.

When you’re holding a hammer everything looks like a nail

The vast majority of depression treatment studies are undertaken by doctors or psychologists. Whilst there is nothing wrong with this per se, most of these studies are evaluating areas where they have expertise (which makes sense). This means that the comparisons are often looking in isolation at one drug verses another (or a placebo) or one psychological intervention verses another. Quite often meaningful advancements in areas can come from someone outside the established “paradigms”. I love the story of the little boy who came across rescue workers who had been struggling for 3 hours with sophisticated hydraulic equipment trying to dislodge a truck which had been tightly wedged under an overhead bridge. After being encouraged to leave the site he quietly said “Why don’t you let down the tyres?”.

We are not just DNA

As human beings our bodies and minds are intricately linked. Depression treatments that focus purely on a “biological illness” are seriously limited. Much of the despair that exists in the western world today can be linked to loneliness, family breakdowns, excessive and unfulfilling work, and financial crises. Saying that depression is caused by low levels of serotonin is like saying teen pregnancies are caused by a sperm fertilising an egg – yes, but…. Depression treatments that fail to reconnect us with our passions and purpose are ultimately going to be short lived solutions.

What are the right depression treatments?

To find out what works best in managing or overcoming depression, we must ask the people who are living with depression what works best for them. In 2007 I asked just that, and their answers were (in order) exercise, support of family and friends, psychological counselling, fulfilling work, relaxation/meditation, nutrition and medication.

Coincidentally, the Black Dog Institute (BDI) –one of the pre-eminent mood disorder units in the world – also undertook a study directly asking those with depression what helped them most. Although there were some differences in the studies, lifestyle strategies were also shown to be extremely important. One of the authors of the published study, Professor Gordon Parker, who has been practicing psychiatry for over 30 years, has now started advising General Practitioners and their patients to exercise regularly to aid recovery.

If Professor Parker, who has published over 600 clinical papers and book chapters regarding mood disorders, can learn something from these results, perhaps we all can.

I am not a doctor and I am not suggesting that if you have depression and have only tried a few anti-depressants to go out and order this medication online. This is my story and what has helped for me. I currently take Tramadol also known as Ultram to treat my depression and anxiety. It is a non-narcotic pain medication that has similar effects on the brain as opiate painkillers. I was originally prescribed this for pain and it had no affect on the pain whatsoever but it did make me feel 100% better mentally and emotionally. Finding a doctor who will prescribe Tramadol for depression is basically near impossible. I discussed the research I did online about this with my doctor and he was willing to start me on Tramadol for depression. I have taken this for over 2 years and have not had to increase my dose or feel I have a tolerance. It doesn’t make you “high” or euphoric like hydrocodone based meds, it just makes ME feel normal. Some people have tried this and says it makes them feel worse. Everyone is different. But this has helped me when nothing else has. I have taken over 40 different medications in the last 12 years for depression, bipolar, anxiety, boarderline and had horrible side effects from them all. Question by Chris H: Depression treatments. Which treatment has worked for you?
I’ve been having symptoms of depression for years and there are times that it is beyond the threshold I can deal with. What has worked for you? At what level would you classify your depression. Mild, moderate, or severe?

What has helped?

Which medication(s)?
Have there been any other treatment(s) that you had tried?

I’m looking for some advice on dealing with my depression that hasn’t responded to treatments. I’ve stopped a couple times because nothing seem to have worked. ECT had been offered, but I’m still thinking about it.

I have found that a combo of meds and talk therapy has helped me the most — altho I still have a long way to go.

I know that many people benefit from ECT, but it didn’t give me any of the positive effects but I got the memory loss side effect.
