Question by Hiram Kix: Did Karl Marx ever write about drug use/abuse?
I know he said that religion is the opium of the masses and et cetera but I am just wondering if he ever wrote anything particularly about drugs or his opinion of how drugs played a role in his world view. I am writing a sociology research paper on alcoholism and am looking for a source from Marx that might help shed light on how he would perceive alcoholism or other substance abuse (without just guessing).

Front-line supervision

Front-line supervisors spend more time with the workforce than any other level of management. They interface directly, on the job with employees. The main task of supervisors is to ensure that the work gets done by those reporting to them. They are held responsible for the productivity and behaviour of the employees reporting to them. Therefore, any action that affects these employees’ productivity and behaviour is of concern to the supervisor.

Drug and alcohol abuse/misuse is an increasing problem in Australia. In 1998 the cost to the economy was estimated at billion and by 2004 the cost estimate was up to billion. (Lauder, 2008). These costs are related to sickness, premature death, reduced productivity, crime and accidents. Drug and alcohol abuse/misuse affects the productivity not only of the employees themselves, but also of other employees.

Importance of training in drug and alcohol abuse/misuse for supervisors

In order to be effective in detecting drug and alcohol abuse/misuse supervisors need to be adequately trained. This training should include:

Company policy on drug and alcohol abuse/misuse
What is drug and alcohol abuse/misuse
Effects of drug and alcohol abuse/misuse in the workplace
How to detect drug and alcohol abuse/misuse
Company policy and practice in drug and alcohol testing

The role of drug and alcohol testing in the workplace

“Employee drug and alcohol testing is intended to ensure workplace safety, security and productivity.”

Employees who are under the influence of drugs and alcohol are a danger in the workplace; not only to themselves, but also to their co-workers. It is, therefore, important to test workers regularly. It is also important that this testing is done within the confines of the law and your company policy. You cannot just ask an employee to take a breathalyser test or collect a urine or saliva sample without several things being in place first. To learn how to collect samples correctly, register for the Workplace Based Certified Drug & Alcohol Collector – Nationally Accredited Training at CMM Technology. This training covers the following Australian Standards:

AS4308:2008 (Urine Drug Testing)
AS4760:2006 (Saliva Drug Testing)
AS3547 (Breath Alcohol Testing)

Guidelines for drug and alcohol abuse detection by supervisors

Supervisors need to look out for the following signs of drug and alcohol abuse/misuse:

Missed appointments, sick days, drunkenness or “on a high” on the job.
Relatives phoning in to explain why the employee is not at work.
Unexplained absences from work station.
Lack of tolerance of co-workers.
Irritability, restlessness, shakiness, trembling, sweating.
Regularly complaining of headaches.
Unexplained fatigue.
Not eating at lunch breaks.
Bloodshot eyes.
Pupils larger or smaller than usual.
Sudden weight loss.
Slurred speech.
Coordination problems.
Lack of motivation.
Seems paranoid for no reason.

If the supervisor suspects drug or alcohol misuse, the Drug and Alcohol policy of the company must be followed.

Conclusion

Drug and alcohol abuse/misuse can be a serious problem in the workplace and the front-line supervisor is in the ideal position to detect abuse/misuse. If equipped with the correct knowledge and skills the supervisor can detect drug and alcohol abuse/misuse at an early stage and can refer the employee for testing, counselling and treatment.

Question by KARENBNL: More on the issue of illegal drug use/abuse?
I work in a research related field whereby a recruiter is contacted by a potential subject and the subject provides personal information including, in some cases, current abuse or prior use of illegal drugs. The big question that a board overseeing the research has is whether or not the information that the potential subject provides could get them arrested. We never ask who they buy their drugs from, nor do we ask if they themselves are dealers. We are only interested in whether or not a potential subject should be considered for a study screening visit. If it turns out the potential subject does not meet criteria for one of our studies, we inform them of this and we destroy any information they provided to us. For the ones that appear to meet our criteria for current drug use, we keep the information in a locked secure area in a locked file cabinet and it becomes part of the researc record. The big question we need to ask here is could any of this information be requested by judge if the person has not been charged with the crime of possession or dealing?

From my own knowledge of the law, if the subject does not disclose the information of participating in a research study ‘himself’ then a request for any such information can’t be made. If the subject discloses to anyone that ‘he’ participated in this study, then the records of information we have could become part of a legal proceeding.

This is actually a really interesting question. The client has a right to privacy, but the client probably waives that by giving you the information/permission to perform the tests. The client does not have a 5th amendment privilege to avoid self incrimination with this evidence because the evidence isn’t testimonial.

So the question basically is evidentiary: can the government (i.e. the prosecutor) use this evidence in court? If that is the question, it centers on what type of a case the client is on trial for. Basically, if the admission of the evidence is substantially prejudicial against the defendant, it won’t be admitted, but otherwise will be. In other words, if the defendant is on trial for using drugs/possession of drugs, admissibility is unlikely.

One thing to note about your question is that it would not be the judge requesting your records. A judge’s role is to evaluate the information presented to him, not to seek out information. It would be a prosecutor who would potentially be asking for the records. From the preliminary evaluation, it may be possible that the prosecutor could in fact subpoena the records, but it is highly unlikely that they would be admissible in court.

If you work for the government or act as the person’s doctor/psychiatrist, they would absolutely not be admissible. Interesting topic, but it’s hard to hit all the issues on a forum like this. Hope it helps.

A person may use drugs for specific reasons. For example, my dentist might prescribe vicodin for pain after surgery. If I keep taking the drug after I have healed and can’t seem to stop using the vicodin, I’m abusing the drug. I’ve lapsed from drug USE into drug ABUSE.
